Job purpose:
The Associate Veterinarian provides medical and surgical services to patients for the purpose of diagnosing and treating disease, recommending services aimed at preventing disease, or managing chronic conditions. This is a leadership position with the important responsibility of ensuring a positive work environment in which the practice can achieve its goals while caring for the community’s pets and building client relationships within the Wenatchee Valley.
Duties and responsibilities
Medical and Diagnostic:
- Provides compassionate care to patients and excellent service to clients.
- Performs the wellness exam in accordance with hospital standards. Uses details from the history and physical exam to educate clients and guide them through the decision-making process for the care of their pet.
- Performs medical, surgical, and dental procedures; provides emergency services in accordance with hospital standards of care.
- Administers anesthetics, performs surgery, and monitors patients during surgery and recovery with the assistance of the technical team.
- Operates diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic and ultrasound equipment, and interprets the resulting images, sometimes working in conjunction with specialty consultants in order to determine the appropriate treatment plan based on the results.
- Prescribes medications in accordance with manufacturers label instructions and uses. Understands common side-effects and common drug interactions with other medications.
- Handles controlled substances and appropriately documents their use.
- Understands and carries out treatment orders from other veterinarians; makes necessary changes in treatment plan when diagnostic results support the decision to do so.
- Promptly and accurately updates client records in necessary software.
- Ensures hand-offs of patients are performed and communicated with appropriate staff correctly for the continuity of patient care.
- Ability to function in a variety of clinical situations and to render a wide spectrum of patient care.
- The ability to incorporate new information from peers, and medical literature in formulating diagnoses and plans and the ability to share that information to peers in a respectful manner.
- Follow federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA.
People Responsibilities, Staff/Client Communication, and Leadership:
- Expresses sensitivity towards the emotional, mental, physical, and financial needs of clients.
- Educates the public about diseases that can be spread from animals to humans.
- Follows up with clients; recommends medical progress visits when appropriate.
- Answers client questions and provides education on various aspects of animal care and treatment. Advises animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding, and general care necessary to promote health of their pets.
- Communicates with staff regarding patients when out of the building so staff can provide timely and appropriate care.
- Responds or interacts with staff using the appropriate communication methodologies, such as email and other mediums available in a timely manner.
- Provides guidance and leadership to the healthcare team that will positively influence the level of care and service provided to the clients and patients.
- Promotes a cooperative working environment among staff members; understands the value of teamwork; shows enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the Clinics function as a unit.
- Motivates, builds, and maintains morale by exemplifying Cascade’s Shared Values.
- Assists in training the assistant team on their tier learning. May sign off on tier accomplishment.
Business:
- Works toward and attains practice productivity standards.
- Works with administration/owner group to periodically review the key performance indicators and plans for changes as indicated.
- Documents all transactions correctly for business reporting purposes being cognizant of the business and operational impact of veterinary actions.
- Contributes and assists as needed developing and growing the business by adding to the overall efficiencies and productivity of the clinic.
- Participates in business development as requested by administration and/or ownership.
- Attends monthly team meetings or ad-hoc committees as requested, and other pertinent in-house training.
- Adheres to clinic standard for billing and lab pricing metrics to ensure fiscal and legal responsibilities for the well-being and profitably of the clinic.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Skills and Knowledge
- Valid and in good standing licensed veterinarian within Washington State
- DEA license
- Knowledge of principles, theories and practices of veterinary medicine and science.
- Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory tests according to Cascade’s process.
- The associate must possess the mental and emotional health required for full utilization of his or her intellectual abilities, the exercise of good judgment, the prompt completion of all responsibilities and responsibilities attendant to the diagnosis and care of patients
- Ability to read and interpret documents, including federal and state regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, medical texts.
- Ability to write reports and correspondences.
- Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment including sterilization techniques for various instruments and materials
- Medicine and Dentistry — Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures.
- Regular attendance and timeliness are an essential function in order to fulfill the requirements of this position.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Strong computer skills in order to obtain and enter client information, order laboratory and diagnostic tests, and receive and send messages.
- Commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics.

- Potential exposure to anesthetic gases, radiation from x-ray machines, chemotherapy drugs, chemotherapy patients and sharp objects.
- Exposure to hazards associated with aggressive patients; hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises; exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases.
- Work is normally performed inside; some outside or home visit work may be required.
Physical requirements
- In a stationary position for prolonged periods of time as in surgery.
- Restraining animals in potentially uncomfortable positions.
- Work requires transporting and handling animals (assisted by other staff members with animals over 40 lbs.).
