Sharing Excess is a Philadelphia-based non-profit that is using surplus to solve scarcity. Our mission is to rescue surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers and farmers and redistribute it to communities in need at no cost to the consumer. We’ve rescued over 30 million pounds of food to date - and we’re just getting started. This summer, we expanded our operations to New York City to increase our impact and get more quality food into the hands of those that need it most.
As our Program Coordinator in NYC, you will play an essential role in establishing and maintaining supplier and recipient relationships, aiding in the overall success of our new operations. This position will require extensive relationship management with vendors and suppliers throughout New York as well as with food banks and other food security organizations throughout the five boroughs. Strong communication and organizational skills are essential. You will also assist in donations data collection, analysis and reporting and other general operational tasks. This is an in-person, on-site position at the Hunts Point Produce Market located in the Bronx.
Position Overview:

This position will be 9 am - 2 pm, Monday through Friday. There is a need for flexibility with scheduling, with potential needs to coordinate with our vendors and recipients as early as 7 am and as late as 3 pm.

Main responsibilities for this position include vendor and recipient relationship management, data collection and analysis, and assistance with operational/administrative tasks.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on a close-knit team and in a warehouse environment.

You will assist with a variety of essential tasks to ensure our operations run smoothly and be an integral part of our nonprofit as we reduce food waste and food insecurity across New York City.
This position reports to our NYC Program Manager.

Responsibilities:

Coordination and Logistics:

Organize and oversee daily operations of food rescue donations, ensuring timely collection and distribution of surplus food from donors to recipient organizations

Maintain daily contact with recipient organizations and donors to streamline allocation of surplus food

Must be proactive and responsive to evolving needs on a daily basis

Develop and implement efficient logistics strategies to optimize food collection, composting, and delivery processes

Partnership Management:

Cultivate and maintain relationships with food donors within the Hunts Point Produce Market to secure ongoing donations and foster regular vendor engagement

Collaborate with recipient organizations, such as food banks and community fridges, to understand their needs and ensure timely and appropriate food distribution

Volunteer Engagement and Training:

Recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers for various tasks, ensuring a reliable workforce to support daily operations

Develop training materials and conduct sessions to educate volunteers on safe food handling, logistics protocols, and the mission of the organization

Data Management and Reporting:

Maintain accurate records of food donations, distributions, and volunteer hours

Generate regular reports on program metrics, including the quantity of food rescued, number of beneficiaries served, and impact assessment for internal and external stakeholders

Compliance and Safety:

Ensure compliance with food safety regulations and standards during all stages of food handling and distribution
Enforce safety protocols to guarantee the quality and integrity of rescued food, maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and health

Qualifications:

Available 9 am - 2 pm M-F (25 hours per week)

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at one time

Must have a personal vehicle or reliable transportation (Our warehouse is in an industrial area & not easily accessible via public transportation)
Compensation:

$25-30 per hour commensurate with experience
